Mr. Soemo’s music lessons are designed to help students understand musical scales and the intervals between notes. The focus is not just on playing, but on truly grasping the structure of scales and memorizing them thoroughly.

🎹 Starting with the Basics: The C Major Scale

Let’s begin with the C major scale:
C – D – E – F – G – A – B – C

When moving from one note to the next, we measure the distance in intervals:

  • C to D is a whole step. Why? Because between C and D lies a black key: either C♯ (C-sharp) or Dâ™ (D-flat). These are enharmonic equivalents—same sound, different names.
  • D to E is also a whole step, with D♯/Eâ™ in between.
  • E to F is a half step, as there’s no black key between them.
  • F to G, G to A, and A to B are all whole steps.
  • B to C is again a half step.

This gives us the interval pattern:
Whole – Whole – Half – Whole – Whole – Whole – Half

This pattern defines the Ionian mode, also known as the major scale.

🌀 Exploring the Modes: Seven Ways to Play the Same Notes

By starting the scale on different notes, we get different modes—each with its own mood and character:

Mode NameStarting NoteInterval PatternMood/Feel
IonianCW–W–H–W–W–W–HBright, happy
DorianDW–H–W–W–W–H–WJazzy, soulful
PhrygianEH–W–W–W–H–W–WExotic, tense
LydianFW–W–W–H–W–W–HDreamy, floating
MixolydianGW–W–H–W–W–H–WBluesy, relaxed
AeolianAW–H–W–W–H–W–WSad, melancholic
LocrianBH–W–W–H–W–W–WDark, unstable

(W = Whole step, H = Half step)

Each mode uses the same notes as C major but starts from a different point, creating a unique soundscape.

🧠 Memorization Matters

Mr. Soemo emphasizes the importance of internalizing these scales—not just playing them, but knowing them inside and out. This foundational knowledge is essential for improvisation, composition, and understanding music theory.
