Write with Dutch Echo
Dutch Echo is not just a magazine – it is a living archive of Rotterdam’s memory and a global conversation. We invite writers, thinkers, artists, and storytellers from every background to join us in shaping this dialogue.
Our compass is Rotterdam, a city built on workers, migrants, and dreamers. For fifty years, the children of the Rotterdammers met de pet carried the rhythm of the docks, the football fields, and the street corners. Today, the traditional worker has disappeared, replaced by automation and artificial intelligence. Dutch Echo preserves their stories, but we also look forward: to the voices that will define the next era.

We publish in English to reach both the world and the newcomers in Rotterdam who navigate their lives more easily in English than in Dutch. This choice makes Dutch Echo a bridge: between local and global, past and future, memory and imagination.
We welcome contributions that explore:
- Geopolitics and economy: oil, migration, automation, and the shifting balance of power.
- Culture and identity: music, art, football, and the everyday life of Rotterdam.
- History and philosophy: from Spinoza to Sukarno, from colonial legacies to future visions.
- Personal narratives: stories of resilience, belonging, and transformation.
Dutch Echo also speaks to those abroad who dream of the Netherlands with hope – people who aspire to something better than what their homeland currently offers. For them, our stories provide a window into how Rotterdam works: its culture, its history, and its evolving social fabric. As a contributor, you help shape that window.
We ask our writers to move creatively within this frame:
- Be bold, be clear, and be authentic.
- Connect Rotterdam’s local heartbeat to global currents.
- Use English as a tool of accessibility, but never lose sight of the city’s Dutch roots.
- Experiment with form – essays, reportage, poetry, visual storytelling – as long as it sparks dialogue.
Dutch Echo is committed to clarity, authenticity, and education. We expose façades, highlight symbolism, and frame complexity in ways that empower readers to think critically. If you share this mission, we invite you to write with us.
Rotterdam is our compass. The world is our horizon. Your voice can help us navigate both.
